The Kutturan Chamoru Foundation is currently working diligently on establishing the first Chamoru immersion program in the continental U.S. As our world quickly becomes a global society, it is increasingly important to be able to communicate with people of different cultures, who speak different languages while maintaining their own unique language
A recent study by Dr. Janet Oh, Associate Professor of and researcher on the development of bilingual children and adolescents at Cal State Northridge, has stated that children who participate in “dual language learning” have advantages compared to those who learn in mono-linguistic programs.
· Rather than leading to confusion, bilingualism has actually been linked to cognitive advantages in young children.
· Adolescents who are more proficient in their heritage language also report better relationships with their parents.
· Research indicates that students who come from backgrounds in which a minority language is spoken, the best academic outcomes are for those students who maintain their heritage language in addition to English.
This Early Childhood Education (ECE) program brings together the resources and the collective efforts of the Asian and Pacific Islanders California Action Network (APIsCAN)/Asian Pacific Policy and Planning Council (A3PCON) and the Kutturan Chamoru Foundation.
